In the final month of 2022, intermodal spot rates on the DrayNow platform decreased across all key markets and are currently trending very close to one another. Overall, the average rate per mile is down 10% in Chicago, 1% in Los Angeles and 1% in Atlanta.

Following the major decrease in the average intermodal spot rate that the Los Angeles market saw in October, spot rates continue to plateau in this area with a 1% month-over-month decline. The cost to move drayage containers to and from the rail in LA has not been this cheap in a long time. Intermodal rates in Los Angeles are down 17% in comparison to December of last year.

After months of relative stableness in the Chicago intermodal spot rate market, the average rate per mile was down 10% in December. This update has brought Chicago rates back down below Los Angeles rates for the first time in three months. Chicago spot rates in December 2022 are 8% lower than the same time last year.

After rising a significant amount in November, spot rates in Atlanta are almost still in the same place, down just 1% month-over-month. Taking a look at the spot rate behavior of the Atlanta market over the past year, the trends here were clearly the most consist out of all key markets. In comparison to the same time last year, Atlanta intermodal spot rates are down 3%.

In our last spot rate update, we discussed the uncertainty around how intermodal spot rates would trend in December due to falling diesel prices vs. the holiday season. From the data, it’s clear that diesel prices played more of a factor in December trends, as the average spot rate decreased across all markets.
