Check out last month’s data on intermodal spot rates.

This month, spot rate trends for intermodal shipping in Atlanta and Chicago remained relatively stable compared to the significant changes observed in Los Angeles. Los Angeles experienced a 7% month-over-month increase, while rates in Chicago and Atlanta rose by just 0.4% and 0.8%, respectively. Rates in Chicago and Atlanta are now closely aligned, with Los Angeles standing out as an anomaly.

The major highlight this month is the 7% month-over-month surge in Los Angeles spot rates. According to the rolling average data, drayage spot rates in Los Angeles have been steadily climbing since the start of the year. Compared to January, the cost to transport intermodal spot freight in Los Angeles has increased by 10%. Year-over-year, spot rates in August 2024 are up by 15%.

After a 9% drop in July, intermodal spot rates in Chicago saw a modest month-over-month increase of 0.4%. The volatility in Chicago was minimal, keeping the cost of moving spot freight in this market among the lowest so far this year. Compared to August 2023, spot rates have risen by 8%.

Atlanta spot rates rose by 0.8%, marking a modest shift from last month’s 2% decline. Despite the slight increase, August still held one of the highest spot rate averages of the year in Atlanta, second only to April. Year-over-year, drayage spot rates in Atlanta are up 23% compared to August 2023.
