Check out last month’s data on intermodal spot rates.
Last month, intermodal spot rates in our key DrayNow markets saw moderate volatility in month-over-month trends. For the record, the rolling average cost to move spot freight in Chicago was down 9%, and up 6% in both Los Angeles and Atlanta. Spot rates in Chicago and Atlanta are now trending close to one another, while the Los Angeles market becomes an outlier.
Following June’s 18% increase, intermodal spot rates in Chicago were down 9% month-over-month. The rate volatility in Chicago made the cost to move spot freight in this market to go from the highest of our key markets to the lowest in just one month. It’s truly anyone’s guess as to what next month will show. Compared to July 2023, spot rates are up 10%.
The Atlanta intermodal spot market is back with declining rates for the second time in a row, this time falling 6%. With this new data coming in, it seems more certain that for the time being, average spot rates peaked in May. Spot rate trends in this market rarely have a lot of volatility, so it’s likely that they will continue to decrease. In comparison to the same time last year, the cost to move freight in Atlanta is up 4%.
After months of overall spot rate decreases that bottomed out in May, the Los Angeles market has seen spot freight rates on the rise again. With the 6% month-over-month increase, the cost to move spot freight in Los Angeles is at its greatest since October of last year. The rolling average in this market is also at its highest point since February 2024. Year-over-year, spot rates in Los Angeles are up 6%.
