Driver Tip: Figure it out before falling off
Are you interested in moving intermodal freight and expanding your owner operator business? Download the free DrayNow app from the App Store or Google Play store, or click the button below.
With DrayNow being an intermodal marketplace, there is absolutely no forced dispatch and carriers can choose to pick up loads that fit with their schedule. We want the platform to work with our carriers and give them the opportunity to haul whenever they can. There is no quota that’s supposed to be met by each carrier, and no one will be pressured into picking up loads they do not want to cover.
When a carrier does decide to take an order from the board, that load gets removed from the marketplace immediately and after a quick approval on our end it will be theirs to haul. Therefore, it is important for the driver to know with 100% certainty that they can actually commit to hauling this particular load. Choosing several orders at once that conflict with one another messes with the marketplace because that order is now not available to other carriers willing to pick it up. It can also cause confusion as to whether the order is actually covered or not.
We understand that there are emergencies that can come up unexpectedly that can cause a carrier to fall off of a load. Other than that, there really should not be any reason why a driver does not run an order that they knowingly picked up. If at the last minute the driver decides against hauling for no apparent reason, the entire order may have to be cancelled if the fall-off is too close to the appointment time.
Think about it this way. Let’s say that someone is having a problem with their electricity, and they call the electrician to have it fixed. An appointment gets set up for 9:30, but by that time comes around they never show up. The customer calls the electrician, who then explains that they booked three appointments at 9:30 and decided to pick up the appointment that worked best for them. It would create an incredibly frustrating situation, and the customer would be stuck with power problems and lose trust in their electrician.
On the DrayNow app, carriers are offered as much information as possible about each load, including location, all-in pricing, appointment times etc. This is to ensure that everything is known about the order they could potentially pick up and that fall-offs do not occur. With all of that information in the carrier’s hands, there should be no reason to fall off of a load, whether it be because of overbooking or not being able to make an appointment time. The whole point of the marketplace is to get matched with the best loads for your business, so it’s important to look over everything and make sure it works for you and there’s no purposeful fall-offs.
