This past Tuesday, we held our latest DrayNow Webinar, titled “Setting a Precedent in Unprecedented Times: The New Freight Climate.”

Hosted by Tom Ryan, our VP of Business Development, this webinar uses historical events, data, and our own industry knowledge to set up a forecast for the future of intermodal freight.

It’s no secret that we’re living through a rare, once-in-100-year crisis, but that doesn’t mean it’s unprecedented. By using past events and their effect on freight, we can find and set that precedent for what may be coming for the industry.

Historical events: Throughout the webinar, Tom discusses the fuel crises of the 1970s that led to trucker strikes, the impact 9/11 had on security & implementing new technology to the supply chain, port strikes costing the economy billions of dollars, and severe weather events bringing intermodal to a complete standstill.

He then very clearly lays out our predictions for what we should all expect in the near future. These include:

  • Container and chassis shortages
  • More detention, and longer dwell times at warehouses
  • Emphasis on trucker advocacy
  • A temporary shift to over-the-road trucking
  • Intermodal starting to bounce back in Q4
  • Freight technology will become more of a necessity

The general consensus: As intermodal begins to bounce back and we continue adapting to a new environment in the industry, real-time visibility and data on each intermodal trip will become a must. The acceleration of digitization begins now!
