Spring Checklist for Carriers
Spring Maintenance Tips for Intermodal Owner-Operators
As winter fades and spring begins, it’s the perfect time for owner-operators to take a closer look at their equipment. Even though intermodal trucking typically involves shorter hauls compared to over-the-road driving, seasonal shifts, especially after months of cold, salt, and moisture, can quietly wear down key components of your power-only setup. Low tire pressure, corroded connections, and other issues can lead to costly delays. A quick round of maintenance now can help prevent surprises later and prepare you for consistent access to high-paying, time-sensitive freight.
Why Equipment Checks Matter in Intermodal
When you’re operating in the intermodal space, your tractor is everything. You’re picking up rail-owned containers and chassis, and any delay or breakdown can impact both your schedule and your payout. A missed load due to a preventable issue doesn’t just cost you time, it could mean missing out on future opportunities. A reliable, road-ready power-only truck helps you book more trips, maintain a strong on-time record, and become a go-to carrier in your market.
Spring Weather = New Challenges
Spring weather is unpredictable. Roads are wet from rain, air lines may have lingering moisture from freezing temperatures, and salt buildup from the winter months can corrode key components. It’s also pothole season, and rough roads can throw off alignment and wear down tires faster than usual. This is when visibility, traction, and brake performance matter, so being proactive now helps you avoid downtime.
What to Check—and Why
Here’s a quick checklist to stay ahead of the season:
- Tires – Look for wear from winter roads, and check pressure regularly. Low or uneven tire pressure can impact fuel efficiency and lead to blowouts.
- Brakes, Lights, Air Lines – Spring rain means slick roads and reduced visibility. Make sure all systems are fully functional.
- Salt Buildup – Clean the underside of your cab and chassis area to prevent long-term corrosion, especially around connections.
- Wiper Blades & Washer Fluid – These may have stiffened or cracked in the cold. Replace now for better visibility in the rain.
- General Inspection – Spring is also a good time for a full walkaround inspection: check for cracks, rust, and loose fittings.
