This month, spot rate trends for intermodal shipping in Chicago, Atlanta, and Los Angeles showed distinct movements. Chicago experienced the largest dip, with a 4.06% month-over-month decrease, continuing its downward trend and maintaining the lowest rates among the three regions. In contrast, Atlanta saw a 3.14% increase, highlighting its consistent growth trajectory. Los Angeles showed a modest 0.08% increase, reinforcing its steady upward trend. Despite these shifts, rates in Chicago and Atlanta remain relatively close, while Los Angeles stands out with its continued gradual rise.

This month’s major highlight is the 4.06% month-over-month decrease in intermodal spot rates in Chicago, marking a continued decline and maintaining the lowest rates among key regions. This steady drop has positioned Chicago with one of the lowest spot rates in recent months. Compared to January, the cost to move spot freight in Chicago has decreased by 11.89%, and year-over-year, rates are down by 19.49% compared to October 2023.

 

Following a significant month-over-month increase in August, intermodal spot rates in Los Angeles have moderated with a 0.08% increase this month. According to rolling average data, drayage spot rates in Los Angeles have shown steady growth since the start of the year. Compared to January, the cost to transport intermodal spot freight in Los Angeles has increased by 4.22%. Year-over-year, rates in October 2024 are down by 2.33% compared to October 2023.

 

Meanwhile, Atlanta experienced a 3.14% month-over-month increase, reflecting a steady upward trend in contrast to Chicago’s more pronounced dip. Atlanta’s rates have shown resilience, with growth since the start of 2024. Compared to January, rates in Atlanta have risen by 10.03%, and year-over-year, they are also up by 10.03% compared to October 2023.
