Intermodal transportation utilizes two primary container types: domestic and international. Domestic containers are typically 53 feet long, designed for freight movement within a country, and offer greater capacity for larger shipments. In contrast, international containers are usually 20 or 40 feet long, facilitating global trade by adhering to international size standards. At DrayNow, we primarily handle domestic containers and will dive deeper into their specifics throughout this blog, highlighting how intermodal trucking plays a key role in efficiently connecting these container types to the supply chain.

Container Sizes and Characteristics
Domestic intermodal containers are predominantly 53 feet in length, providing ample space for various types of cargo. Each container is marked with a unique identification number, typically found on the sides and back, which is crucial for tracking and logistics management.

DrayNow Trip Types: Pickup and Delivery
On the DrayNow platform, carriers encounter various trip types, but the majority involve pickup and delivery:

Pickup: Carriers begin by retrieving an empty container from the rail yard to transport it to a shipper for loading. Before selecting an empty container, it’s essential to perform a thorough inspection, ensuring it’s clean, odor-free, and free from structural damages like holes or tears. Conducting a light test can help identify any unseen damages. Container loads for owner-operators require careful attention to these details to ensure a smooth and efficient process.

Delivery: Carriers retrieve a loaded container from the rail yard and transport it to the delivery location. It’s imperative to verify that the container number matches the reference code provided in the DrayNow app. This unique identifier is commonly located on the back or sides of the container. While carriers are not permitted to open sealed containers, performing an external inspection for any visible damages is recommended.
