In December 2024, intermodal spot rates in Chicago, Atlanta, and Los Angeles showcased diverse trends. Chicago led the way with an impressive 11.30% month-over-month increase, underscoring its strong seasonal demand and solidifying its position as a pivotal intermodal hub. Atlanta followed with a 10.42% month-over-month increase, reflecting a rebound from previous declines and demonstrating steady growth. Meanwhile, Los Angeles experienced a slight 1.30% month-over-month decrease, but its rates remain the highest among the three markets, with a robust 12.87% year-over-year increase. These movements emphasize the distinct dynamics across these regions, driven by seasonal shifts, demand fluctuations, and market-specific factors.

Chicago’s intermodal spot rates continued their upward trajectory in December 2024, with the average spot rate reaching $3.84 per mile, reflecting an 11.30% month-over-month increase from November’s $3.45 per mile. Compared to December 2023’s rate of $2.64 per mile, the market has seen an impressive 45.45% year-over-year increase, underscoring robust growth. Additionally, December’s rate represents a 13.95% increase from the January 2024 baseline of $3.37 per mile, marking a steady climb throughout the year. These trends further highlight Chicago’s role as a key intermodal hub, benefiting from strong seasonal demand and stable carrier availability.

 

In December 2024, Atlanta’s intermodal spot rates averaged $3.71 per mile, reflecting a 10.42% month-over-month increase from November’s $3.36 per mile. Compared to December 2023’s average of $3.36 per mile, rates have also risen by 10.42% year-over-year, demonstrating solid growth. This upward trend highlights Atlanta’s continued importance as a key intermodal hub, benefiting from seasonal demand and consistent market strength.

 

Los Angeles’ intermodal spot rates slightly softened in December 2024, averaging $4.56 per mile, reflecting a 1.30% month-over-month decrease from November’s $4.62 per mile. However, compared to December 2023’s rate of $4.04 per mile, rates have increased by 12.87% year-over-year, highlighting notable annual growth. As one of the most critical hubs for intermodal shipping, Los Angeles continues to experience robust demand and evolving market dynamics, contributing to consistent long-term rate increases.
